Steroids Assist Treating Septic Shock

Scientists from George Institute for Global Health found out that steroids can significantly increase survival rate, when taken as supplementary septic shock treatment.

Sepsis is a dangerous condition, when the reaction of an organism to infection may cause death of a patient. Let alone damage to different organs, such as heart, brain, kidneys.

The results of this research could improve the recovery of dangerously ill patients and save health systems worldwide billions of dollars yearly. At the end of this study scientists reported that steroids reduce both the period of septic shock and recovery period spent on life supporting therapy.

The usage of steroids does not cause lower death rate in comparison to the group of patients who didn’t receive them. Still they undoubtedly play important role in survival.

As we know, during septic shock the organism lowers blood pressure. It causes the reduction of blood flow to different organs and tissues. Steroids can improve blood circulation and counteract acute inflammation processes. Still there are debates concerning the suitable dose and duration of steroid intake.

The Trial

During international trial conducted in patients from different countries of Europe and Middle East scientists showed that steroids are very efficient in solving septic shock problem.

Though they do not reduce the rate of death, patients with steroid treatment spent less days in intensive care. Besides they had less blood transfusions in comparison with control group.

Septic shock can occur at any age and it doesn’t depend on health condition of a patient. In survivors it causes such severe injuries as amputated limbs, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Thus, it’s important to find a safer and more efficient way in treating this condition.

Though there are many unclear questions about septic shock treatment, steroids undoubtedly contribute to survival. Therefore they should be included into treatment plan.
